Some may call Rob's profession a dying one but Chicago's Butcher & Larder is doing just fine. Rob's mission is to have Butcher & Larder be Chicago's first, all whole animal butcher shop, and provide the community with the highest quality meat cut to order. Watch this beautiful video shot by Sergio Salgado that we stumbled upon on Those Who Make.

A 3rd Generation Artisan

First and foremost, Perry Ercolino is a maker. His grandfather was a leatherworker from Italy, and  Ercolino learned his craft in his father's workshop, making him a third generation artisan. Having mastered the trade, he took over the family business in 1980s and continues to run it to this day.

Stanley Kubrick at LACMA

Stanley Kubrick was known for transforming genres that he worked in by taking full control of his projects. The exhibition covers the span of Kubrick’s works, starting from his photographs for Look magazine in 40s, and continuing with his amazing directorial practices from the 1950s through the 1990s.

His films will be  portrayed through a selection of scripts, production photography, lenses and cameras, set models, costumes, and props. In addition, the exhibition features two projects that Kubrick never completed: Napoleon and The Aryan Papers.

Exhibit opens for public on November 1, 2012 at LACMA.

Backstreet Skateboards

Deep in the alleys of Brooklyn (Greenpoint to be exact), a box truck is parked. Inside of the box truck, DL Skateboards makes custom, handmade skate decks "one hundred percent hand-sawn from a 3/4" solid oak slab. Then sanded, drilled, painted, and gripped"... As handmade as it gets! CoolHunting documents the founders Lauren Andino and Derek Mabra in their studio/box truck shaping decks before their great move to California.

Sub_Urban Riot's Space

One of the freshest clothing labels coming out of LA right now is Sub_Urban Riot. I love them because they started small, by selling cool graphic t-shirts, and have grown over the years to offer full collections for both men and women - we're talking everything from refined sweatpants to button-down oxford shirts to dresses. Their cuts are modern and simple yet their designs are irreverent and kooky - a perfect pairing. And of course, with all our featured designers, they make everything here in the USA.

The owners, Jason and Nate, sat down with us to share their story and show us their space...

Fleet Foxes & Stacey Rozich

THE-SHRINE-AN-ARGUMENT-1.jpg

This 8 minute epic video was just released and its simply stunning. Chief songwriter and singer of the Fleet Foxes Robin Pecknold's older brother Sean has been directing animated videos for the band for a while now. This entire piece was created with hand made paper cutouts and animated by Sean Pecknold & Britta Johnson (check out Brita's 'Crashing Waves')

The characters were designed by one of my favorite illustrators Stacey Rozich. Stacey has created work for The Stranger, K Records, Southern Lord, and shows in galleries from LA to NY (and Berlin). Her blend of esoteric primitivism, bold fabrics and enigmatic creatures have a cultivated depth that borders on the magical. Enjoy!
